Teeth which are badly decayed can be saved by doing root canal treatment. Its needed when an injury or a large cavity damages the tooth by affecting its pulp or the nerve. The dentist numbs the tooth/anesthesizes the tooth and then removes the infected pulp. Cleaning and shaping of the tooth canal is done by using reamers and files. After debriding the canal is filled with a root canal filling material. The crown or the top portion of the tooth is filled with a tooth colored or a silver filling. If the tooth is grossly destroyed with minimum crown structure remaining, an artificial crown can be put on the tooth.
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root or a screw that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants may be an option for people who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease or an injury or some other reason.

Symptoms :
Visit your dentist to get an accurate diagnosis of whether you are suffering from periodontal disease or not.
Bleeding gums while brushing.
Swollen gums/redness in gums.
Loose teeth.
Pus discharge from gums.
Constant bad breath.
The most common cause of gum disease is improper oral hygiene. Proper hygiene can be maintained by regular brushing twice daily using the right toothpaste and tooth brush and at the same time using the correct method of brushing.
Regular visit (once in 6 months) to your dentist is a must. If any of the above mentioned symptoms are experienced by you, then a periodontist would be the right person to solve all your gum problems.
About periodontal treatment:
First visit: Proper case history taken and if any investigations needed in terms of blood reports or xrays are advised to the patient.
Second visit: scaling (cleaning) of the teeth to remove tartar is carried out, deep gum cleaning is done. Patient can be put on antibiotic cover if required.
Third visit: After initial scaling or cleaning of teeth; areas where there is loss of bone support or teeth which are loose (mobile), flap surgery (gum surgery) is done under local anesthesia.
After numbing the area, gums are reflected, with the help of curettes, root planing is done. Artificial bone graft material is put in areas where there is bone loss.
Gums are sutured back in place and a periodontal pack is placed to protect the surgery site and aid in healing. Post-surgical instructions are given to the patient.
Patient is recalled after a period of 2 weeks.
